There isn’t one person who hasn’t felt in complete disagreement with a statement someone else has made. At one point or another, we have all been moved enough to state our opinion. This is what starts wars on the comment sections of various social media platforms today. Disagreements even happened in the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960’s. In the March trilogy by John Lewis and Andrew Aydin, you see these differences of opinion play out. March is about the story of John Lewis’ early life and later on, his involvement in the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) and the fight for equal rights. Marshall seemed rather content with jus t protesting, but Lawson wanted to push things further because as Lewis points out, â€Å"Young people, as we knew very well, are willing to risk everything for the cause.† (Lewis and Aydin 2: 131). Lewis knew the newer generation was extremely passionate about the movement and would do anything to help it succeed. Since the newer and older generation had different ideas about resisting segregation, we can see why they didn’t approve of each other’s ideas. These disagreements weren’t the only ones that caused divisions the movement, . There were also organizations who unlike SNCC, SCLC, and CORE wanted to use violence. One such organization was the Nation of Islam led by Malcolm X. Lewis, like many others, believed profoundly in the nonviolent method because he was taught and trained on how to resist nonviolently by Jim Lawson. He disagrees with Malcolm X’s use of violence when he states â€Å"†¦ violence, no matter how justified, was not som ething I could accept. But I could understand his appeal and the feeling of restlessness that drove it.† (Lewis and Aydin 2: 149). Short History of Gambling in the United States of America...

Short History of Gambling in the United States of America According to the Commission on the Review of National Policy toward Gambling, gambling in the United States grossed over $40 billion dollars in 1995 (Dunstan, 1997). Professor I. Nelson Rose describes three waves of gambling during the history of the colonies and the United States. The first of these waves began during the start of this great nation and lasted until the mid-1800s. The second wave was at the end of our Civil War and lasted until the early 1900s. Finally, the last wave started during the Great Depression and is still going strong today. I believe a fourth wave has already commenced with new technology paving the way. Taking the substance in larger amounts or over a longer period than was intended. This can also be construed as the tolerance criterion for gambling where the gambler uses increasing amounts to achieve excitement. 4. Having a persistent desire or unsuccessful efforts to cut down or control substance use. This behavior parallels the loss of control criterion in gambling where the gambler despite repeated attempts to cut down, stop, or control the gambling is unsuccessful. 5. Spending a great deal of time in activities necessary to get the substance. This criterion seems to be consistent with the gambler who has a preoccupation with gambling. 6. Giving up or reducing important social, occupational, or recreational activities due to substance use. This seems to almost mirror the gambler’s risked significant relationship criterion. 7. Continuing to use the substance despite knowledge of having a persistent or recurrent physical or psychological problem that is likely to have been caused or is exacerbated by the substance. I am unable to find a gambling criterion to match this exact behavior, but in gambling lying, chasing, and illegal acts seem to almost rival the substance dependent characteristic stated. Unemployment Types and Causes free essay sample

Unemployment has been a problem in the United States since the beginning of our economic structure. The current unemployment rate fell by 0. 4 percentage point to 8. 6 percent in November. â€Å"The number of unemployed persons at 13. 3 million was down by 594,000 in November. The labor force, which is the sum of the unemployed and employed was down by a little more than half that amount. † (Trading Economics, 2011). There are many different types of unemployment. Frictional unemployment reflects the fact that it takes times for people to find and settle into new jobs. For example if 12 individuals each take one month before they start a new job, the unemployment statistics will record this as a single unemployed worker. Technological change will often reduce frictional unemployment. Another type of unemployment is structural; this type of unemployment reflects a mismatch between the skills and other attributes of the labor force and those demanded by employers. Natural rate of unemployment is the summation of frictional and structural Unemployment Types and Causes 3 unemployment. Demand deficient unemployment is another example of unemployment. In Keynesian economics, any level of unemployment beyond the natural rate is most likely due to insufficient demand in the overall economy. The cause and effects of finding work in the United States has been a hot topic because unemployment has been affecting many Americans. During the eighties and the nineties the Unites States experienced a lower level in unemployment. However, in the past few years the unemployment rate has risen over ten percent. This is the highest percentage increase in the country in over twenty years. â€Å"Unemployment in America has not just affected one class of Americans, its affecting the rich, middle class, and the lower class. † (Rakoczy, 2009).

This sickening feeling of being cramped up against bodies is beginning to make me feel as though I just walked back into that awfully retained hospital once again. And that revolting smell of body sweat, from the old man who was just inches away from, physical contact. Well. At least I managed, half suffocated and completely exhausted to spare myself a seat, squeezing me through the little space provided; I practically dragged myself into the nearest seat. Now having a space of my own after, finally catching my breath. Thankfully the trains finally moving, only realizing through the sudden knock of the track; and the clouds of black smoke that continuously belched into the sky. I sat surprisingly relieved, gazed out of the steamed window, searching for desperate need of help. Just as I felt the thought of Billy slip away from my mind; the depressed storm bellowed outside and I just couldnt help but think about our delightful adventurous day out, all the wonderful momentsThe beach, our own little trip up to the forest, and his sneaky venture up to my room. Ha, ha, he does make me laugh; showing his eagerness to climb up into the window, standing there pulling all the faces that you could possibly think of. Not realizing that I had laughed aloud and being stared at suspiciously by others that surrounded me. Yet I could not help restricting myself from the thought of Billys face, as he dragged himself up to my window; his cheeky face steadily modifying its color, putting that great smile back on my face. It was just like romeo and juliet. Except Romeo isnt such a War leaching person, its a shame really. When Billy and I met one another it made me feel like I actually exist in this world. He made me feel like I should appreciate myself. Hes such a polite, young gentle man. A bit forceful though, an I like it this way kind of man. He was ever so polite to me, hed given me a sense of sensitivity and warmth, and Ive never felt anything like it before. He made me feel secure, I felt like he had been another chance for me to put myself back on track; after what happened, I dont think I could accept another death in my life. But my attempts to persuade Mam didnt work. She couldnt accept the fact that I had found someone new in my life. I couldnt even convince her to say hello. It hadnt been such a good idea to have taken him to see Mam. Its not like she helped the situation anyway, that malicious woman! Theres nothing nothing thats she ever approves of me for. She just sat there goading him along like a bull! I really dont think that I could ever forgive her, not even if I tried! Who does she think she is!? She sits there with her cup of tea and rambles on about how theres no such thing as true love Judging him before shes even introduced to him, let alone knowing who he is! I knew it! I just knew that I shouldnt have taken him to see her! Yet he was so eager to see her, what must he think of me now? How could I be so selfish! I dont even know where he went; I just left him, my frustration just seeded through my veins, Just thinking how offensive Mam was, it just made me tremble all over the place. The fury in her eyes, her soft voice suddenly transformed to a shameful deepened tone. I couldnt bare to think how Prior must have felt. I feel ever so sorry for him. What must he be thinking? I continued contemplating about Billy, predicting how he must be so furious at me; whether he still wants me; what hell say to me when I see him. That is, if I see him. The train came to a sudden halt, only to continue this ghastly screeching sound as we approached yet another, wet, busy station; which predictably encouraged the baby to scream even louder. Its making my head ache, almost feeling although it was about to explode, into tiny little molecules. I was beginning to wonder whether Well. Can I actually handle the fact that Billy is ill? I mean. Well, Ive seen what hes like when he gets these horrifying nightmares. He cant control himself! His almost like another person. I dont think I could even possibly consider bringing my children up around something like that, and then theres his asthma attacks, he just doesnt know how to control it. Hes longing to get himself back to that godforsaken place to that pointless war out front. His illness is getting more severe by the day, and he just doesnt see it. I couldnt bear to handle the thought of bringing up his children while hes out there! Its suicideHe just doesnt understand it! He doesnt seem to appreciate what already has. When I come to think about it, maybe I shouldnt have been so harsh on Mam sometimes I understand why she was being so protective. I shouldnt have confronted her. Everything shes done for me, shes virtually saved my life. Keeping me inside all those nights away from them mean men. She was strict. Yes. Of cause, why wouldnt she be? But I see now. I see that I needed a mother like her, and that I took advantage of it all. I should be proud to have a mam like her. How do I know what true love is?Its not like Ive ever had the satisfaction of the true experience, is it?! Im just that typical, young, working class girl, living on her own, no children, no life, nothing! Just little,Sarah Lumb, the working class munition-ette worker! It isnt that bad is it? At least I dont go out wandering into a war, like young Billy wanting to get myself killed! Look at all them poor souls at Craiglockhart! Its dreadful to see so many, innocent, young men have half of their bodies blown to pieces! Just the thought of it makes we quiver. Its horrible. And yet, there you get people like these, sitting on the train; socializing, laughing along to pathetic, hideous jokes; its like lifes a fun, colorful game for them, strolling around like theres nothing happening! I just wish I could do something! Anything! I dont understand how life can still go on for these people, I know mine has long gone; the moment I left Billy. Ok. I know how silly it was of me to start rowing with Billy, but he brought it on himself, and seemed the right decision at the time. So I left, at that moment I felt his eyes follow me, as I left the house; I could see his shocked impression through the reflection of the mirror. I continued, not knowing where I was going. And here I am. I dont actually know where he is now, nor how hes going to get back. That is if he does decide to come back.

People, Organisations and Leadership Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

People, Organisations and Leadership - Essay Example These can be explained by looking at the reasons the employees who left the organisation gave for leaving and then analyzing them using popular human motivation theories. The following literature looks at the reasons which the employees gave for leaving and the analysis. Managers who left indicated he following factors as contributing to their need to leave; Isolation As for the junior line managers, one of the main reasons that they gave for leaving was that they felt isolated and that they were not being involved in policy development. Two things arise from this. One of them is the fact that the executive managers failed to involve and consult the junior managers in the development of policies. It is an essential practice to always involve everyone in the organisation in any policy and strategy development process. Failing to do that will only lead to the employees feeling that they were left out in the process and this can increase the possibility of resistance to the strategies d eveloped (Hubbard, Taylor, and Pocknee 1996). At the same time, failing to involve the employees in development of policy and strategy development will only mean that the employees will most likely not agree with the changes (Turner and Crawford 1998). There is no new policy that does not involve a shift of the way the firm is operated. People generally do not like change. People do not trust change processes because they are never sure of how the process will affect their lives and work (Helen 2005). In this regard, people are built to naturally refuse and resist change. This could be the reason why the changes introduced did not work. The other reissue with failing to involve the line managers in the process is that the managers may have felt overlooked. According to Maslow’s law, people’s needs change as their lives progress. In this example for instance, the needs of an employee are not like those of a line manager. A line manager, apart from having a good job and a good pay, would like to have job satisfaction (Cooper, Funnell, and Lee 2002). This job satisfaction comes from knowing that he is respected and recognised by the senior management (Bangs and Schaper 2003). When this recognition is denied him by the senior management when management fails to consult him or her, they may have a feeling that they have not been not respected, and that thus have reduced job satisfaction. At the same time, recognition by the senior management is more likely to offer the manager a way to grow and advance in the workplace. Lack of respect from the juniors The junior line managers who left also talked about the fact that they did not feel respected by the employees they were managing. This can be a particularly big source of job dissatisfaction regardless of how much the managers were earning. Money is not the only satisfaction source in a job because there are other very complex issues affecting satisfaction and motivation (Grenway 2008). This issue is p robably connected with the above issue of isolation. The lack of respect from the subordinates could be because they know that their managers do not have the full backing of the senior management. According to the policy developed, line managers were supposed to have a closer monitoring of the employees in order to increase production. This may have increase worker dissatisfaction because as Turner and Crawford 1998 say, people do not like to be monitored

How to manage a country Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

How to manage a country - Essay Example There is dire need for establishment of various research projects in China that would focus on management of domestic e-waste through lifecycle analysis of electronic products and modern treatment technologies (Wang et al., 49). According to survey done by StEP in the year 2012, the government of China is expected to play a pivotal role in the planning, organizing, regulating, monitoring and implementation of different formal collection and recycling of e-waste initiatives within the country. The support from the government is necessary for the purposes of influence and development of e-waste recycling industry. Additionally, there is need to consider some of the most critical issues related to environmental e-waste management such as establishment of collection channels, designing rules safeguarding legislation and subsidies, establishing appropriate conditions on recycling standards and license management. However, the efficiency in e-waste management can be achieved through cooperation from international organizations that assists in establishment of state-of-the-art technologies in treatment and appropriate management strategies and policies. Moreover, the government requires heavy investment in scienti fic research that plays important role in definition of problem and assessment of the impacts (Wang et al., 49). There has been illegal export of e-waste to China and this has led to overwhelming consequences on available e-waste recycling sites within the country. Therefore, this calls for elaborate understanding of the quantities and flows of different used electronics within the country. Therefore, the initiative on e-waste management is necessary for the country since there is unclear channel concerning the amount of e-waste generated in China and inflows from international field, and their ultimate destinations. Understanding of the material flows and various actors within formal and informal sector is crucial to ensure efficiency

Deinstitutionalization of the Mentally lll Essay Example for Free

Deinstitutionalization of the Mentally lll Essay 1. In my article deinstitutionalization bought on some positive effects by lowering health cost, but negative consequences came into the community also. Bringing into effect such things as Medicare and Medicaid, and the establishment of the Community Health Centers. This began to make it easier for the mentally ill to be able to get the help and rehabilitation that was needed rather than just being placed in mental institutions and left alone. â€Å"For example, decreases in inpatient mental health care can be complemented by increases in outpatient mental health care. Decreases in inpatient mental health care can also be paired with increases in other forms of care, such as social welfare, criminal justice, or nursing home care.† The article showed that the government began to step up and take part in the care of the mentally ill, making a way for the public hospitals to no longer be responsible for the mentally ill and private sectors to step in and offer more one on one care. Deinstitutionalization began to free up rooms in hospitals and offer lower medical costs 2. But crime and homelessness did increase in local communities. Some former patients went home to their families, some to nursing homes, where almost a million mentally ill Americans are said to now live. Because of the amount of mentally ill people being released or put out of mental institutions this bought on a great deal of them living on the streets and forced to rob and steal in order to survive. This is how the crime rate began to increase, mentally starting to be placed in the jail or prison system, which in the long run ends up costing far more than one being placed in a mental institution. Communicable diseases became more prominent as women began prostituting themselves. With their mental capacity questionable, it was still believed that people didn’t care what happened to them nor did they pay attention to their needs, until the epidemic of STD’s such as AIDS began to rise and start to affect what was considered to be â€Å"normal Americans households.†

Women and Society During the Early 20th Century Essay -- essays resear

Women and Society during the early 20th Century Women always had to deal with all kinds of situations throughout history. Sex was becoming to be a woman’s way of expressing herself and in a way have control over certain situation Edith Wharton’s "Summer" and John Steinbeck’ s "The Chrysanthemums" show two characters (both of them women) struggling between society‘s rules and laws and their own believes and desires. Both stories were written in the beginning of the 20th century and both authors made it very clear that the women’s thoughts were unacceptable. While Charity Loyal in "Summer" had the ability to satisfy herself sexually with a city boy and go as far as she could be her desires. Elisa Allen in "Chrysanthemums" fantasized about the idea of being with another man, but did not take her thoughts into action. Both, however, seem to look in nature the answer for the constant struggle to achieve freedom. This theme, like sex, is renowned all throughout th e stories. Wharton decides to start the story with a description of the town where Charity Royall lives. She says, "A little wind moved among the round white clouds on the shoulder of the hills, driving their shadows across the fields and down the grassy road that takes the name of the street when it passes through North Dormer. The place lies high and in the open, and lacks the lavish shade of the more protected New England Villages" (91). North Dormer seems to be a very peaceful place. The description gives a tone of calmness and happiness. This is very important for Charity, since she has an especial connection to nature all through out the story. When she is looking to free herself from North Dormer, Galante Gonzalez, 2 she looks for it in nature. After a long day working in the library (where Charity is usually by herself), Wharton shows how happy Charity becomes once she is able to leave and be outside with nature. She says, "She loved the roughness of the dry mountain grass under her palms, the smell of the thyme into which she crushed her face, the fingering of the wind in her hair and through her cotton blouse, and the creak of the larches as he swayed to it" (98). Charity lies in the grass almost hugging it. She shows emotions toward the grass (nature) that make it seem almost like a person. Moments like this one, made her feel free... ...be plenty.’ Alcohol will ease the pain, perhaps." She is upset, there was obviously These two women deal with the oppression imposed by society during the turn of the century. But their desires and emotions are stronger than what people thought at the time. For Charity, her love for nature allowed her to feel free. Eventually she loses all of that when she becomes pregnant and marries Mr. Royall. For Elisa, the struggle of wanted Galante Gonzalez, 6 to be like man did not give her a sense of freedom, only when she is working in her garden. She, like Charity, never completely achieved her freedom by the end of the story. That he was from the gods. His father would be one of the most influential people in his life, making sure that his education was prioritized. That meant being tutored by the infamous Aristotle. Just because his father was gone conquering land and halting revolts, doesnt mean he was absent in making sure his son had the tools he needed to succeed. Having access to such high education gave him knowledge that was influenced with logic, culture, philosophy, music, and more. What Aristotle gave him were lessons he would later use to help him conquer, and take control over empires, all while preserving the unique cultures along the way. Sometime in 336, Alexanders father was assassinated. Alexander was now head of operations. He quickly took control and killed the alleged murderer of his father, and managed to kill major groups that hated him, and his rivals. Traveling south and a few acts of heroism later, he was made generalissimo for the future invasive attack on Asia that he created. He continued to travel and conquer during his reign and was said to be invincible. He forced into the Shipka Pass, destroyed Triballi, made way through the Danube to then separate into the Getae. Continued onward to crush the coalition of Illyrians who made way into his territory. Whilst all of that was happening, gossip spread around that he had died, which set off a revolt and people wanted a new ruler. He hiked 240 miles for 14 days, from modern day Albania, to Thebes. They refused to give up, so he tore their city to the ground, leaving just temples. Six thousand were murdered and the people who lived were sold into slavery. Peo ple were shocked, afraid, and impressed with his perseverance, vigor, and violent actions. Although his opponents left him no choice but to be violent, its rightfully so that he is one of the greatest military leaders of all time. He ruled Macedonia, was a leader of Greece, and conquered the Persian Empire and more. His killings were a necessary means for him to grow his power, but he was tasteful in regards to his respects. He understood the effort needed to be a ruler and recognized that same vigor and love of people in other rulers, including his opponents. Taking the right actions in their burials, making sure the correct cultural traditions and burials were happening, and respecting the loved ones and the followers of those he killed were just some ways he showed his nobility, honor, and thoughtfulness through actions. His ruling was lead through the love of his and others culture, while doing what was needed to. He demonstrated how to be one of the most incredibly successful rulers, while still maintaining dignity, morals, and the respect of his peers and people. After his death, temples and statues were built in his honor. Many of these sites held events to honor Alexanders accomplishments. Alexander was very astute and embraced and integrated his knowledge and techniques from many cultures including; the Egyptians, Greeks, Persian, and Indians and he made them into one. This made his knowledge broader and more encompassing than others. Alexanders legacy was considered far-reaching and profound. Responsible for the destruction of the Persian Empire and more importantly, his conquests led to the spread of Greek culture (Hellenism) across his empire.
