The Civil Rights Movement During The September Trilogy By...

There isn’t one person who hasn’t felt in complete disagreement with a statement someone else has made. At one point or another, we have all been moved enough to state our opinion. This is what starts wars on the comment sections of various social media platforms today. Disagreements even happened in the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960’s. In the March trilogy by John Lewis and Andrew Aydin, you see these differences of opinion play out. March is about the story of John Lewis’ early life and later on, his involvement in the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) and the fight for equal rights. Although the Civil Rights Movement resulted in desegregation, which wouldn’t have been possible without the contribution of its leaders†¦show more content†¦He, and many of SNCC believed paying bail to get out of jail when you are involved in a nonviolent protest was just justifying the unjust system. Marshall seemed rather content with jus t protesting, but Lawson wanted to push things further because as Lewis points out, â€Å"Young people, as we knew very well, are willing to risk everything for the cause.† (Lewis and Aydin 2: 131). Lewis knew the newer generation was extremely passionate about the movement and would do anything to help it succeed. Since the newer and older generation had different ideas about resisting segregation, we can see why they didn’t approve of each other’s ideas. These disagreements weren’t the only ones that caused divisions the movement, . There were also organizations who unlike SNCC, SCLC, and CORE wanted to use violence. One such organization was the Nation of Islam led by Malcolm X. Lewis, like many others, believed profoundly in the nonviolent method because he was taught and trained on how to resist nonviolently by Jim Lawson. He disagrees with Malcolm X’s use of violence when he states â€Å"†¦ violence, no matter how justified, was not som ething I could accept. But I could understand his appeal and the feeling of restlessness that drove it.† (Lewis and Aydin 2: 149). Although Lewis was conscious of what would cause people to use violence, it still wasn’t what he stood for. Education and Awareness Will Promote Environmental Justice The goals of this environmental justice conference are stated simply: firstly, to explore whether racial minorities and the poor are being environmentally victimized, and secondly, to evaluate public policies that promote environmental fairness. Each speaker provided insight and information from their respective area of expertise. Led by keynote speaker Dr. Bunyan Bryant, they drew upon the realms of academic investigation, government and public policy, sociology, healthcare, and philosophy to unite the environmental movement with the quest for social justice. As the movement continues to grow and hopefully breach international boundaries, Dr. Bryant emphasizes the im portance of promoting an understanding of the central issues of race, income, intent, pollution control versus prevention, positivism and participatory research, and top-down versus bottom-up perspectives of investigation. Overall, Dr. Bryants talk reveals the uniting theme of the conference - the need for public awareness and understanding of environmental issues and concerns. Dr. Manuel Lizarralde spoke of green imperialism and the relationship of indigenous people with the conservation of natural environments. He emphasizes the importance of encouraging knowledge and understanding of the environmental effects of the consumerism lifestyle, as well as recognizing the expertise of indigenous people concerning their environment. Dr. Lizarralde dispenses with the notion of the noble savage, instead explaining that indigenous people often do not have the technology to cause extensive environmental damage. Short History of Gambling in the United States of America According to the Commission on the Review of National Policy toward Gambling, gambling in the United States grossed over $40 billion dollars in 1995 (Dunstan, 1997). Professor I. Nelson Rose describes three waves of gambling during the history of the colonies and the United States. The first of these waves began during the start of this great nation and lasted until the mid-1800s. The second wave was at the end of our Civil War and lasted until the early 1900s. Taking the substance in larger amounts or over a longer period than was intended. This can also be construed as the tolerance criterion for gambling where the gambler uses increasing amounts to achieve excitement. 4. Having a persistent desire or unsuccessful efforts to cut down or control substance use. This behavior parallels the loss of control criterion in gambling where the gambler despite repeated attempts to cut down, stop, or control the gambling is unsuccessful. 5. Spending a great deal of time in activities necessary to get the substance. This criterion seems to be consistent with the gambler who has a preoccupation with gambling. 6. Giving up or reducing important social, occupational, or recreational activities due to substance use. This seems to almost mirror the gambler’s risked significant relationship criterion. 7. Continuing to use the substance despite knowledge of having a persistent or recurrent physical or psychological problem that is likely to have been caused or is exacerbated by the substance. I am unable to find a gambling criterion to match this exact behavior, but in gambling lying, chasing, and illegal acts seem to almost rival the substance dependent characteristic stated. Frictional unemployment reflects the fact that it takes times for people to find and settle into new jobs. For example if 12 individuals each take one month before they start a new job, the unemployment statistics will record this as a single unemployed worker. Technological change will often reduce frictional unemployment. Another type of unemployment is structural; this type of unemployment reflects a mismatch between the skills and other attributes of the labor force and those demanded by employers.
